that took place on Friday, October 22, 2021 and that addressed the role of art, culture, and creative industries in urban spaces. This was a hybrid event with live broadcasting by NODE and the Qu\u00e9bec government.<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ugb-divider ugb-divider ugb-0094b18 ugb-divider--v2 ugb-divider--design-basic ugb-main-block\"><style>.ugb-0094b18 hr.ugb-divider__hr{margin-left:0 !important;margin-right:auto !important}.ugb-0094b18 .ugb-inner-block{text-align:left}<\/style><div class=\"ugb-inner-block\"><div class=\"ugb-block-content\"><hr class=\"ugb-divider__hr\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>\u201cHow do artists and urban spaces interact?\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>\u201cHow do creative people shape our cities and what stimuli can they provide for urban development?\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the questions tackled head on by the speakers invited to the \u201cCreating Cities\u201d conference organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nodeforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NODE Forum for Digital Arts<\/a>&nbsp;and the Qu\u00e9bec government on the occasion of Canada\u2019s presence as guest of honour at the 2020-21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buchmesse.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frankfurt<\/a> Book Fair, on October 22, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To provide an overview of these complex issues, the organizers opted for <strong>three different angles of approach from two geographical locations<\/strong>. He went even further by sharing his wish list: \u201cto co-invest, co-create, develop ties, and share experiences\u201d with representatives from other major world cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, one such representative was also present at the event, namely, Ellen Blumenstein, from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/imaginethecity.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Imagine the City<\/a>, an organization based in Hamburg. In answer to the question \u201cWhat does it take to create a city\u2019s image?\u201d she said that a city\u2019s <strong>media image<\/strong>, which is disseminated on social media, is&nbsp;<strong>as important as its physical image<\/strong>, which can be appreciated onsite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the conversation among the curators and cultural mediators, Guillaume Aniort\u00e9 returned to this point to say that what makes a city\u2019s signage successful is its <strong>attachment to its own nature.<\/strong>&nbsp;He pointed out that Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Entertainment District uses a red dot to identify key locations on its territory, and that this red dot is directly inspired by the district\u2019s past as a \u201cred-light district.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the role of artists in their community, Aileen Treusch stressed that \u201cartists are not just there to decorate cities. We need their creative approach to think outside the box.\u201d<br>Ellen Blumenstein said that public art \u201cgenerated much more interest and achieved greater outreach\u201d than works presented in museums. According to her, only 1.7% of the population visit museums while<strong>&nbsp;20 to 30% interact with works located in public Olivier Girouard, from Montr\u00e9al studio Ekumen, was the first to take the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He began by demystifying public space installations by reminding us that the same tools were used to works for large indoor venues and outdoor public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 titre de l\u2019un deAs one of the creators of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ekumen.com\/loop\/index.php?lang=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Loop<\/em><\/a>, he said he was pleased that his work would be shown on the fringe of the Frankfurt Book Fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He went on to explain how exports were part of his artistic process. So much so that his most recent creation, \u201cSpacetime,\u201d incorporates the notion of export by linking live connected benches between two public squares in two different cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivier Girouard passed the microphone on to Thomas Payette of the Mirari studio, who stated that the works he designs for public spaces are built for travel. Indeed, he stated that the equipment can be dismantled and reassembled and that it can withstand the vagaries of the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding \u201cDuo,\u201d he is particularly proud to have \u201cbrought contemporary dance into the public space. This brings discoverability to this often neglected discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To present the German point of view, Berndt Jasper and M\u00f3ka Farkas of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balticraw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baltic Raw Org<\/a>&nbsp;collective presented their success stories such as the Wowtecture event where iconic buildings from around the world were reproduced in plywood. Berndt Jasper took the opportunity to explain that \u201c<strong>modern cities need icons<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 son tour, Stefan Weil chanta les louanges de la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 canadienne, For his part, Stefan Weil also sang the praises of Canadian creativity, underlining that he was greatly impressed by what he saw during his visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/effetquebec.ca\/en\/entreprises\/mutek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mutek.<\/a>&nbsp;He also noted that the interactive installations are \u201clike a playground for adults, and maybe for children too. It inspires people to reconnect with their environment.<\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Payette stressed that \u201cworks in public spaces need a lot of resources. We need the right funding.\u201d But because of the way funding is distributed, however, \u201cwe can\u2019t take the bold step of putting projects forward. We can only respond to calls for projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A member of the audience then raised the issue of measuring the success of interactive facilities.
